Back to the ballroom - Olé

Very excited to be back in the ballroom....line dancing and have a new dance to conquer. Not hard to rumba to this one!
64 counts to remember. Olé

If you ever get the chance to see Pink Martini perform live, do so. You will not be disappointed!

Finally seeing the fruits of labour. A little teeny tiny QUINCE!

First time I've actually had fruit. It's not great to eat, but some make jam. I'm just enjoying the look! How cute are they????

What a party!

What a party indeed! Finally, this fabulous woman had her birthday marked by a special event. The "gym buddies"...won't say how long we've been slogging away in the basement city gym (I should add...some more regularly than others :)) feted "Linda H." at a potluck luncheon. Seventy years old and looking like a youngster! She's our friend, our inspiration, and our creative spirit.

This is a good time to celebrate a woman who has shown us how to stare down adversity, and kick it to the curb. If there ever was a testament to the magic effects of continued exercise, Linda is the example.

Cheers Linda, here's to many more!!!
We know you'll get your wish.

There is nothing quite like fresh branches of rosemary at the beginning of fall. They are thick and redolent of an entire summer of sun bathing. Lamb chops on the grill, a drizzle of olive oil and rosemary fresh from the herb garden.

Dress Classy Dance Cheesy

I expect to be doing this next week in my Wednesday fitness class. I love the explanation to dress classy and dance cheesy!

So much fun! Try it!

The latest priming victim

This is one of those slightly overwhelming projects. Simply put, it never got started because the idea of priming and base coating a piece of this size was daunting. Since the front door primer brush was recently hitting anything in it's way, it was the perfect time to get this toy box prepared for a fancier finish.

I am drafting plans to adapt a Betty Caithness folk art pattern to embellish this wonderful piece of wood.

I wonder where that papier mâché pumpkin is?

Day Two

The story goes that Daddy was able to leave for a couple of hours today.
Zoë did splendidly on her own.

Daddy assumes that painting was involved in day two activities.

Mamère assumes that Monday and Wednesday are now official bath nights! Remember this is California and a very "organic" nursery school.
She LOVES it!

For the birds

The birdhouses are finally installed.
The entrances have been covered with copper shapes to deter anyone taking up residence. We had a disaster with birds vacating the premises and wasps taking over and really slumming things up, so this housing complex is strictly for observation.

These little homes have been lingering around for a long time (White Rose was still in existence!) just waiting for a dash of primer and a bit of paint.

My Dad built this one a long time ago. He'd like it perched above his phlox.

This one from a dearly departed friend, Doreen

None of this could have happened without the help of the Professor who gamely installed lattice, and helped in all aspects of placement and hanging. The birds seem to heartily approve and have decided that these are Vanity birdhouses...trying to see their images in the copper! ...and the good thing, they look like they've been there forever.

The Big Day

Two afternoons a week, Zoë will go to nursery school. This week, the parents were allowed to stay and see how everything goes. This is how we managed to get a sneak peek at Venice Gardens!

Okay Dad, you did a great job! Hair - check, dress - check, backpack - check.
I'm ready!

Let's go! My Daddy and I walk to school together.

These snacks are great!

It was a very big day for a little 2 year old girl. zzzzzzz

The Anatomy of an Antique Chair

I should have known better.
I just couldn't leave this darling little ladies chair in my neighbour's garbage. Alas......It has little porcelain wheels too!!!

This is how the chair was most recently covered. I knew it held many more layers and surprises.

Based on the number of nail holes this is likely not the very first upholstery, but it will serve as the original for this story.

A sneak peek at what's inside

Ah HA! As I suspected. Original perfectly preserved horsehair's OLD

Hand sewn burlap, covering and shaping

This I was not anticipating...a thick layer of straw in perfect condition

Burlap covering springs

Springs tied, sitting on a supporting web base

and after much careful and preserving removal. The frame!

I have fabric that I want to use to recover this little hummer. It will take a lot more work from here, filling holes, priming...I still have some of that primer left, a coat of antique coloured white paint...

Looking forward to cooler fall days to spend in the garage!

Remember these?

A cheerful little group almost ready to be mounted on the trellis in the back garden. They match the siding on the house. The birds should be impressed!

Mission Accomplished

Always takes longer than you think! Removing hardware, don't forget ...don't close door. Door open for long periods of time. Washing and rinsing with TSP, dry. Taping. Priming with oil...necessitates turps clean up...yuck, dry. Base coat with Benjamin Moore "Philadelphia Cream"...not sexy, but matches siding and trim. Dry. Replace hardware for overnight. Day 2. Remove hardware. Second coat, same as the first. Dry. Replace hardware. Dry. Close door. Goodnight moon!

Very pleased at long last. Door has been original primer white for far too long. It takes a team! Everything has to go away now. Not as quick as you might think :) Love it.

Captain Primer

Long weekend project to paint the front door, left a bucket of primer and a wet paintbrush on the loose. These birdhouses were in the path of the "Captain Primer". Stay tuned.
