"Neither rain, sleet nor snow, the mail must go!"

I'm off to my rather underwhelming-in-the-Shoppers Drug Mart post office this morning. I have to mail an art card to Jane Davies. I wish I could go every morning to Jane's Post Office. In Vermont. When you read the article you will know why. This brings a smile to my face and makes my heart sing.

Look at this one of some now 80 or so replies to Jane:

What an amazing idea! I would love to participate. Put me down on your list and I'll send the postcard out next week. Flooded...oh I can get my artist to flood your post office! I teach over 180 art students daily so we'll turn this into an art project. If you can send a postcard to the class it would make a huge impact! Perfect community project! I'll tell my art colleagues today and they also teach over 180 students...that will be over 1,500 cards with the 7 of us alone! Fun!
Creatively Yours,
Debbie : )

I only knew about this while flipping through Facebook to which I have to admit to being solely a "lurker". My friend Lennie had this post up and it is in honour of her that I will send "Grace" Lennie's angel postcard.

Lennie's postcards are available on Redbubble
they are wonderful.

So in Lennie's name I will send Jane Davies "Grace".
Hope it saves the Post Office!

Thanks Lenore

Go see it

We have been unable to get out to the movies of late, but today, managed to get to the theatre at 11:30 a.m. for a $6.00 ticket! The audience was predominantly senior citizen age, but they make less noise and tend not to eat as much popcorn, especially at 11:30 a.m. We were able to keep awake during the performance too :) If Daniel Day Lewis doesn't get the Academy Award for this.....

Audiences in Canada rarely applaud after a movie. They did this time!

Cold weather cooking

"Yes Helen, there is a 2013 Milk Calendar."

That's the good news. The bad news is that we did miss it, and they are now apparently out of stock due to heavy demand.

This was the recipe that sparked the conversation. The 1981 version of Leek and Mushroom soup. I love the tureen as much as the concoction within. This is what we had for dinner last night and will happily finish tonight. It has sherry in it. How civilized.

More good news. There is now a link to the calendar, that contains not only the recipes, but also a video of the preparation.

This is the SOUP recipe.

Now the perennial question. Do you have to wait for the recipe that is coming up months later, or can you make the May recipe in January? :) I'm going back to December myself. Those scones look amazing!

A good cold weather diversion

My interest has been piqued of late by embroidery.
Pam Garrison and Charlotte Lyons do such charming work that I decided to unearth a project that I enjoyed many years ago. This will serve as my practice before launching into more ambitious pursuits.

I love "easily transportable" handwork and it is "in vogue" at the moment, so will spend the next episodes of Downton Abbey satin stitching away! I really need the practice. Either my eyesight is dimming or I'm losing the touch....either way, practice makes perfect?

Brrrrrrr

The Alice in Wonderland flamingos and flowers were wondering if they could come out of the shed to play now.

 NO NO NO

We are headed for arctic cold temperatures this week. Stay in there little ones.
Keep warm everyone.

Waiting

I'm hoping that if I post this today, my parcel will arrive in the late delivery.

I'm waiting for my "New Year's" cards to arrive from Shutterfly. That is the only problem with Shutterfly. It seems to take a snail's pace from the time your photo cards are printed until they make it across the border.

Having only recently shifted from sending Christmas cards to New Year's cards, it's a learning curve. I'll get this right some time. From now on, conditions permitting, I'm taking a summer picture and placing the order in November!

What to do What to do???

What do you do when you arrive at Disneyland, intending to stay late for the fireworks, only to find out that there are so many people in Fantasy Land that it is temporarily closed??

After your initial shock, you decide to stay and go to Downtown Disney, which is not a part of the park itself, see how things go, and try again THREE HOURS later!

Here's what you do. You take a look in all the shops.

You build some Lego things.

You learn about parrots.

You enjoy the ice rink and wish you could do that too! Next year when you will be 3.

After looking longingly at the on-site hotel, warming up, and wishing you could get a room, you go back the way you came and look at more Lego.

Wave goodbye to Mickey and Minnie.

Hope that you can get in now as the sun in setting and it's getting cold.

At the request of the almost three year old, you go immediately to the Small World ride.

You delight at all the lights in the park coming on to a countdown

 3-2-1...Magic!

The entire Small World had been transformed to a world of Christmas!
 Fabulous.
This remains one of our favourite rides.

Try a new ride that is on your wish list and open this time. Casey Junior Circus Train.

Ride in the wild animal cage of course!

One last spin on the carousel

It is now getting very cold and the fireworks are an hour off, so following the wisdom of our very patient and understanding granddaughter, we say goodbye to Disneyland and the castle all covered in snow and lights.

Next time we come, we will all be a year older and we will have to pay full price. I think that will require a stay in the hotel nearby and a nap between exciting events!
For Mamère and Papi for sure! :)

All photos taken with my iPhone. Not bad for such low light conditions.

What were Luca and the other guys doing at home? Warm in their beds watching the world go by!

In search of Hollywood

One day on our latest trip to LA, we did a drive-by visit of Hollywood Blvd. and went down the main drag. I wanted to see the newly refurbished "Hollywood" sign, so Jane masterfully manned the wheel and our two car convoy (Michael and the boys in close pursuit) set off to the hills!

Everyone says there isn't much to downtown LA, but we had to do it as we are usually spirited off in the opposite direction to Disneyland which we now know quite intimately:)

This is a location we shall have to return to. Just missed the Helen Mirren Star by days. Of course. Oh well yet another reason to return for the drive and more of the LA area next time.

The Academy Awards have just been announced this morning, which makes me itch to see the movies.

A good reason to learn how to play the ukulele

My friend Helen has a ukulele just like this one.

I'm counting on my friend Helen to learn this "Boom-Dee-Ya-Da" song, perform it with her group and then teach me how to play.

I need to get a ukulele. Maybe when I'm in Hawaii!

Since the ukulele group are all teachers I shall have to point out that the spelling of the lyrics
"Daysies"(Daisies) and corresponding rhyming "sugar pies" (sugar peas) should just remind them of The Compleet Molesworth

3 year old imagination

Sitting around one afternoon while Jane was nursing Luca in the "Au Lait", Zoë decided to play some sort of game with the kiddy lip gloss that she got for Christmas. I suppose it was necessary to get her her own brand as opposed to using up all my Burt's Bees!

She loves the word "makeup" but it would seem it's even more important that the "makeup" is a family who enjoys tea parties.

I'm sure Jane will be wondering why in the world I posted this, as it is mostly a lot of babble and then "smushing" the whole dog and pony show to end.

Just one of those days when I thought this was amusing.

Today she is 3

Don't lose your shadow!

You can get far away very quickly...good luck on this one Mum and Dad!

Happy Birthday Zoë!!

Movies will never be the same

Sunday, in Marina Del Rey, my daughter and I attended "Les Misérables"! The lastest idea from AMC Theatres in select cities is "dine-in movies". We were lucky enough to get the handicapped seats in the very last row since they were not booked. It's quite the set up!

Cinema Suites is an upscale movie theatre with comfortable, premium recliners-aka barcaloungers :), an extensive menu, an over 21 age policy, full cocktail bar and service at the push of a button.

Once you figure out the feet up chair back buttons, you're all set to order!

Jane took full advantage of being out on the town and away from kiddies to sit back and tuck in!

This is not a milkshake!

This is what I'm talking about. Movies will never be the same after this experience!

The Green Apple Martini to start

Even the screen actors like the concept. Hey girl! Out of my martini!!!

By the way....we loved the movie. Great afternoon.
