Speaking of rabbits

Down the rabbit hole

Yes! Please join us for breakfast tomorrow!

You had me at that well eaten vanilla cake with mocha frosting!

Nights on BROADWAY

Okay now keep it real!

Time for someone to go home to bed now!

Poured ourselves out of Joe Allen's (thanks BAP,) early evening. We may be the only people in New York not here for Super Bowl.  The city is rockin tonight!   Very festive.

Will be using only the iPhone and iPad for a bit. Weird. Then again, it's wonderland 🐛

Maggie Continued......

Remember Miss Maggie Rabbit? Well, she is finally finished!

After her initial start, it was off to make a smallish wardrobe. This is her knitted dress, and now that she has boots on, she can stand up, if she's very, very clever and careful.

She loves her Liberty lawn fabric dress and keeps warm these very chilly winter days with her knitted shawl.

The finishing touch are her "starched" whiskers! I kid you not...it works as per instructions!

One of the construction details was inserting elastic thread in her dress neckline and cuffs. I must say that while Liberty lawn is fabulous fabric, it is not the easiest in tiny bits and hems on the sewing machine!

First of all I misplaced the elastic thread from the kit, causing 50 fits...later found it while trying to ferret out #18 Darning needles.

Into Mother Jean's box of needles and came across this perfect little packet. Not only is it well marked and the exact needle called for, but it's also very nostalgic that my Mum's needle box has something to do with the construction of her great-granddaughter's Maggie Rabbit. I love that it shows it's wartime price of 7 cents.

Zoë has been very excitedly watching Maggie progress via Skype. She is so anxious to be able to see her and really, really, wants Maggie to come to her house NOW!      Someone wondered what Luca would be getting.....Luca at 15 months is more interested in the boxes, pots and pans, but I hear that there are more kits proposed at Posie Gets Cozy....perhaps a fox???

What it took

This weather we are having ......

"And finally she gets there!"

I LOVE this song.

"There's no crime of passion
Worth a crime of fashion"

"I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes!"

Worth watching

Sometimes it's strange how things come about. I have a daily box-calendar from the Metropolitan Museum of Art that flips a new piece of art each day of the year. Sometimes I love the image so much that I remove it from the stand and keep it out "just in case" I might want to use or refer to it again. Last year, Monday, July 8, 2013 was a drawing titled: "Egon Schiele "Portrait of a Woman" Color Lithograph. Metropolitan Museum of Art".

When I go to the Met, I hope to see as many of my retrieved favourites as possible.

This oil painting of the same name has a fascinating history behind it. At the very time that I was organizing my foundlings, I came across a documentary on TVO entitled "POW - Portrait of Wally"

By now, you may or may not have seen the trailers for this upcoming movie about the very issue of repatriated art. As someone said in the documentary, these pieces are the last prisoners of war. How true. It's a fascinating trip through the world of art collecting and dealing.

The story of "The Goldfinch" is based on a piece of stolen art.........from, you guessed it.... the Met!

My, my six degrees of separation for sure! Now to get to the Met!

I'm tellin' ya!

The Polar Vortex is back! It is bloody freezing and I'm not going out.

Here is what I will be doing. Remember that pile of books?? Are you reading "The Goldfinch" yet???

The inside flap reads:
""The Goldfinch" is a novel of striking narration energy and power. It combines unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language, and breathtaking suspense, while plumbing with a philosopher's calm the deepest mysteries of love, identity, and art. It is a beautiful, stay-up-all-night-and-tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate."

Consider yourself told!
I'm totally obsessed. I don't know where it's going, but it has a stellar start.

This way, it's not so difficult if people are bobbing around outside in pools in California (Jane and Zoë) , or basking in the desert (Karen)!!! By the time I get there in February you know it will be raining, but for now.....this will do:)

My Hero

It is dark and snowy and blowy and very, very cold. This Nissan commercial says it best. I think even the snowmen are fed up! BTW This was filmed in Toronto!

Under the circumstances

Out the door today.....here we go again!

DONE

Don't worry, this is finished and may come in handy the next few weeks! It is alpaca, soft and squishy and very warm and fuzzy.

UNDERWAY

Miss Maggie Rabbit  from Posie Gets Cozy,  is well underway. Her nose will be next when there is enough light in the sky to see!   I love kits!

ON DECK

The reading pile. One splendid day this week I got out to see "Philomena" and was able to spend some time in the adjacent bookstore choosing whatever I wanted with my most generous birthday gift-card from my gym buddies. What a great day that was! This may take a while. I just added "The Goldfinch" and at some seven hundred odd pages, and my slow reading rate, it could take me until spring. I will save the smaller Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore, recommended by Carol for traveling.

Snow...Schmo...Bring it on!

Who would have thought?

A few weeks ago I had a rather unusual email request.

It was to use one of my photos as the back cover of a magazine! When I arrived home last evening the magazine was in the mailbox.

In April, 2012, David Plummer and I had attended an exhibition at the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.

Apparently there is a magazine devoted entirely to The Titanic. So now my little life-boat tackle picture is the entire back cover of the "Winter 2013-14 edition". "Voyage 86". "Titanic's hero from Hawthorne".

Pretty exciting, and I have to admit shamefacedly to being a bit flattered, but also a bit scary that you can be found no matter where you are with an iPhone!

And so it begins.....SCIENCE

Yesterday "the girls" were doing experiments.

It involved, crystals, bases and acids and a bit of cabbage powder. Zoë was entranced. Lots of mixing and waiting were required.
The waiting was the hard part for a four year old.

When various liquids had turned into jelly-like solids, Zoë was insistent that Jane count each one. Jane took the "scientific approach" that it looked like there were are least 80 little coloured pieces. Zoë persisted that the measurement be exact. 1..2..3..4..(Zoë's lips silently mimicking Mommy's count) at around 50, Jane declared that based on how many were left on the plate, there were likely 80 as she had said.

Very tenderly, and with her teacher voice, Zoë tapped Jane's arm and said "keep going, you'll get better".

There were 117 pieces.

Credit: I think this picture was taken by Daddy who was keeping Luca out of the laboratory. Luca is also wearing barettes these days!:)

Snow Day.....SNOW DOG

It seemed like a good idea at the time. I had a few "tidy up" things to do in the back yard and Myles decided that he too would like to romp around. The weather has modified and it's not so extremely cold today. Since our walks this past week have been perfunctory at best, a little fresh air for everyone seemed just the ticket. I didn't want to put on his dog coat, this was just supposed to be a romp.

While I busied myself close to the house he decided on the long shot

Oh HEY..that's where my squeaky toy is! Taking a flying leap!

Even your "feathered" ears fly in a little breeze

This is how it goes when you bring your toys outside!

Okay, enough is enough, this is looking snowbally.....oh dear

SNOW DOG has turned into WET dog....There are literally little snowballs from one end of the house to the other. The kitchen floor has dog "feather" marks.....GET OUT THE HAIR DRYER!!!

If there was ever a reason NOT to throw out old towels...here is a good one. This has become the best idea yet. Just cuddle in a nest of towel, turn up the heat and MELT!

Did someone say it is supposed to RAIN next????? He'll be wearing his dog coat, trust me!

I'm calling it

You've heard of Snow Days....well, I'm calling it

"SNOW WEEK"

Here's what you'll need:

An LLBean tartan flannel nightgown

A pair of cosy slippers, just like these!

A fleecy blanket will be wonderful for snuggling on the couch

A lovely mug for your hot drink of choice

NETFLIX.....I'm going for the first two seasons of Downtown until next week when the second episode of season 4 airs!
Nice to review at any time

This to knit while you are watching

If you have time, make a sticky toffee date cake with bourbon from Ina Garten

When you tire of watching, you might like to read this

And if you absolutely must go outside, you'll need THIS!

Remember my LL BEAN parka???

Well it's worth it's weight in gold these very frigid, snowy, icy days.

Only use this in case of dire emergency. You can survive on what is left in the freezer and you don't need to go out until Saturday at the earliest. This is what I'll be up to. It is supposed to be -40 Celsius tonight! See you next week :)

Wherever you are....stay warm and be safe! Cheers!
